Caritas Embu is the socio-economic and development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Embu, established in 1987 as the Development and Social Services Department (DSSD) and later restructured as DOE Caritas. We are guided by Catholic Social Teaching, rooted in Gospel values, and committed to transforming lives through community-driven development.

We serve the people of Embu County across all five sub-counties: Embu East, Embu West, Embu North, Mbeere North, and Mbeere South. Legally, we operate under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act Cap. 164 of the Laws of Kenya, with Diocesan boundaries aligning exactly with those of Embu County.

Why We Exist

In the heart of Embu County, there are families who go to bed hungry, youth whose talents waste away without opportunity, and communities struggling against poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.

Many live in silence, forgotten by systems, cut off from resources, and burdened by challenges beyond their control—lack of clean water, unreliable harvests, unemployment, violence, and trauma.

At DOE Caritas Embu, we exist to change this reality.

We are the development and humanitarian arm of the Catholic Diocese of Embu. We are called by love, compassion, and Catholic Social Teaching to stand with the poor, walk with the vulnerable, and work toward a just, dignified, and self-reliant society.

Our Driving Belief

We believe that every human life is sacred, and that poverty is not destiny. Our cause is rooted in this belief—that by walking with communities, building their capacity, and nurturing their God-given potential, we can create lasting, transformative change.

We are not just about giving aid.
We are about building people, restoring dignity, and planting seeds of hope that grow for generations.

TESTIMONIALS

Client Feedbacks

“I used to think being a man meant being tough and never crying. I sometimes bullied others to feel powerful. But through the Beacon Boys mentorship club at school, I learned that true strength is in being respectful and kind. We talk about real life—how to handle anger, how to treat girls, and how to be responsible. I now want to be a peer leader and mentor others too.”

Brian Mutwiri – Student, Beacon Boys Program

“I had never held my own money before I joined the savings group. Every week we contributed KES 200. Caritas trained us on budgeting, record keeping, and business skills. Now, I have a poultry project with 35 hens. I sell eggs to local schools. I also bought my first gas cooker. We no longer depend only on our husbands. We are women with voice and value.”

Beatrice Nyaga – Women SHG Member, Kiritiri

“I was jobless for over a year after finishing Form Four. Depression hit me hard. Then I joined a youth group supported by Caritas Embu. We were trained on entrepreneurship and received a small loan through PROMIC. I started a motorbike repair shed. Within 6 months, I hired one more person and added a spare parts kiosk. Today, I am self-employed and helping others too. I feel like I have a future again.”

Joseph Muriuki – Youth Entrepreneur, Runyenjes

“Before Caritas came to our village, my harvests were poor and unpredictable. I used to rely only on maize, and when the rains failed, we went hungry. Through their agriculture training, I learned how to plant drought-resistant crops and make compost from kitchen waste. Today, my farm has spinach, sweet potatoes, and even pawpaws. For the first time, I sell extra produce at the market and pay school fees for my daughter. I now farm with knowledge, not just hope.”

Mary Wanjiku – Smallholder Farmer, Gachoka
