51 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Faith in Action. Hope in Practice.

"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." — Matthew 25:40

OUR MISSION

Faith in Action. Hope in Practice.

We are called by God to "defend the cause of the Fatherless" (Isaiah 1:17), and our purpose.

Caritas Embu is the socio-economic and development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Embu, established in 1987 as the Development and Social Services Department (DSSD) and later restructured as DOE Caritas. We are guided by Catholic Social Teaching, rooted in Gospel values, and committed to transforming lives through community-driven development.

We serve the people of Embu County across all five sub-counties: Embu East, Embu West, Embu North, Mbeere North, and Mbeere South. Legally, we operate under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act Cap. 164 of the Laws of Kenya, with Diocesan boundaries aligning exactly with those of Embu County.

What We Do

Our Identity The word Caritas is Latin for charity — a reflection of God’s love for His people. At Caritas Embu, we are the living expression of that love through our work with the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized.

Our Development Approach

People-Led Development (PLD)

We believe development is most effective when driven by the people themselves. Caritas Embu facilitates a bottom-up model where communities:

  1. Reflect on their history and current challenges
  2. Identify their own needs and solutions
  3. Organize into Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  4. Develop action plans with minimal external input

Caritas provides technical support, training, and coordination to ensure these solutions are viable, sustainable, and impactful.

Our Vision
A society where everlasting peace is shared by all God’s people.

Our Mission
To holistically empower people to develop themselves towards improved life standards, in collaboration with local and international partners, and in accordance with Gospel values and the social teachings of the Church.

Our Core Goals

  1. Improve household living standards through targeted interventions and capacity-building.
  2. Promote sanitation and hygiene to reduce disease and improve health outcomes.
  3. Enhance food security and mitigate climate risks through sustainable agriculture.
  4. Empower youth, women, and men with skills and opportunities for integral development.
  5. Strengthen savings and credit culture among low-income earners for financial independence.
  6. Support environmental conservation through community awareness and natural resource stewardship.
  7. Promote peace, social justice, and dignity in all aspects of life.
  8. Build Caritas Embu’s institutional capacity for more efficient and impactful delivery of services.
