In a significant move to strengthen collaboration between faith-based development and academic research, the Diocese of Embu – Caritas and the University of Embu have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing community empowerment through education, training, and sustainable development programs.
The MoU was signed by Rev. Fr. Alex Mati, Director of Caritas Embu, and Prof. Daniel Mugendi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Embu, during a joint ceremony attended by officials from both institutions, clergy, students, and development partners.
A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
The agreement will enable the two institutions to:
Jointly develop and implement community-based research and extension programs
Conduct training, internships, and volunteer placements for students in Caritas development projects
Collaborate on environmental conservation, food security, youth empowerment, and WASH initiatives
Organize joint forums, public lectures, and innovation competitions on social justice and sustainability
“This partnership blends spiritual and intellectual capital,” said Fr. Mati.
“It brings the Gospel and science together to serve the people of Embu with dignity and practical solutions.”
Bridging Academia and Community Transformation
Prof. Mugendi, while welcoming the collaboration, noted that the University of Embu is committed to community transformation through applied research and believes that working with Caritas will extend their impact beyond the lecture hall.
“As an institution of higher learning, we must remain grounded in real-life community needs. Caritas Embu brings years of experience in working with grassroots communities, especially the vulnerable,” said the Vice Chancellor.

The partnership will prioritize key development themes, including:
Climate-smart agriculture and agroecology
Youth vocational training and innovation hubs
Social justice education and civic engagement
Health and sanitation outreach
Monitoring and evaluation for impact-based programming
A Church–University Vision for Empowerment
Rt. Rev. Peter Kimani Ndung’u, Bishop of the Diocese of Embu, applauded the initiative, calling it a step toward “faith-driven, evidence-based development.” In a message read on his behalf, he emphasized the Church’s openness to partnerships that promote human dignity, intellectual formation, and sustainable livelihoods.
