Caritas Embu Launches a Tree Nursery.

As part of this year’s Caritas Week celebrations, Caritas Embu has launched a transformative Tree Nursery Initiative that reflects the core mission of Caritas: to serve with love, protect creation, and uplift communities. The initiative aligns closely with this year’s Caritas Week activities and embodies the spirit of ecological responsibility emphasized by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ and the message of Pope Leo XIII: “I have loved you.”

The idea for the tree nursery was championed by Caritas Embu Director, Rev. Fr. James Murithi, who encouraged the team to take bold action in caring for our common home. With his guidance, staff members came together to begin the first and most foundational step of the nursery filling seedling papers with manure to prepare for sowing.

This simple act, done collectively, symbolized unity, service and the shared responsibility of nurturing creation. It marked the official beginning of a project that will extend far beyond Caritas Week.

A Mission Rooted in Love and Sustainability

The newly established tree nursery will serve as a sustainable source of indigenous and fruit tree seedlings for community planting initiatives throughout the year. Instead of limiting environmental action to a one-week celebration, Caritas Embu aims to create a continuous cycle of planting, nurturing and educating.

The nursery will focus on:

  • Indigenous trees to promote biodiversity and restore degraded ecosystems
  • Fruit trees to support household nutrition and income generation
  • Agroforestry species that help farmers improve soil quality and climate resilience

By establishing this nursery, Caritas Embu is creating a steady, sustainable source of seedlings for community planting activities throughout the year. The project also resonates deeply with Laudato Si’, which calls on all people to care for the earth, live responsibly, and protect vulnerable ecosystems.

This work is also guided by Pope Leo’s words, “I have loved you,” reminding us that every act of stewardship is an expression of love for humanity, for the planet, and for future generations.

The flexible approach ensures that the nursery becomes both an environmental and economic asset, serving the community while straightening the sustainability of Caritas Embu’s mission.

The long-term goal is to produce thousands of tree seedlings annually, which will be planted across Embu County during community outreach programs, parish engagements, and environmental conservation campaigns.

Caritas Embu envisions this nursery as a continuous reminder that love must be shown in action. By planting trees, the organization is planting hopeone seedling at a time.

As Caritas Week continues, Caritas Embu encourages every community member to take part in planting and nurturing trees. Each tree we plant today becomes a gift to future generations offering shade, clean air and renewed life to our environment. Whether in our homes, schools, parishes or farms, planting a tree is a simple yet profound way to care for creation and take responsibility for the world we will leave behind.

Let us join hands in growing a greener, healthier, and more hopeful Embu County.
