CATHOLIC FOCUS

CARITAS WEEK BEGINS

The momentum of Caritas Week, a celebration of service running from November 17th to 23rd, surged onward today as the Caritas Embu team joined hands with the faithful Christians of St. Teresa Kithimu Parish, Embu.

The initiative was made even more special by the presence of the Bishop of Embu, the Rt. Rev. Peter Kimani, whose attendance underlined the profound spiritual and developmental significance of the event, emphasizing the Church’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods.

A United Effort for Green Development

The event brought together Caritas staff, dedicated parish members, volunteers, and the Diocesan leadership in a heartwarming show of unity. This collective action highlights a crucial pillar of the Caritas mission: integrating environmental responsibility with sustainable development.

Bishop Kimani led the group in a prayer and blessed the seedlings before joining in the actual planting, emphasizing that caring for creation is an essential part of the Christian vocation. He echoed the DOE Caritas Mbeu programme slogan “Self-help is the best help.”

He also referenced Pope Leo IV’s first encyclical, ‘I have loved you’, emphasizing the Church’s long-standing mission of uplifting the poor.

Focusing on Ecological and Economic Value

The planting focused on species that offer both ecological benefits and economic value to the community:

  • Fruit Trees: Ensuring a future supply of fresh, nutritious produce, promoting health and food security.
  • Avocado Trees: A highly valuable commercial crop in the region, providing a potential source of income for parish projects and community members.
  • Macadamia Trees: A long-term cash crop with significant economic potential, emphasizing Caritas Embu’s commitment to self-reliance and commercial sustainability.

In addition, other distributed species included Grevillia, Eucalyptus, Cypress, and Umbrella Trees, ensuring diversity and providing shade and timber.

The day was filled with energy as spades were wielded and over 50 seedlings were carefully placed into the earth. In total, 600 trees were distributed to the Kithimu locals. Each tree planted is a symbol of hope and a tangible investment in the health of the community and the planet.

A Hub for Holistic Development

By partnering with St. Teresa Kithimu Parish, Caritas Embu reinforces the idea that the Church is a hub for holistic development. The parish grounds will now serve as a living demonstration of sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration, inspiring parishioners to replicate these efforts in their own homes and farms.

This activity, championed by the Bishop, is a critical part of the Caritas Week objective—to mobilize the entire Diocese in acts of mercy and development, ensuring that our shared future is resilient, green, and prosperous.

With today’s success, Caritas Embu is one step closer to the week’s culmination. The entire week of service, stewardship, and solidarity will conclude on Sunday, November 23rd, with a Thanksgiving Mass at Iriamurai Parish.
