Caritas Embu Kicks Off Caritas Week with a Visit and Practical Training at Kigumo, Kathunguri Parish

Today, Monday, November 17th, marks the highly anticipated start of a week dedicated to service and solidarity as the Caritas Embu team officially kicks off its annual Caritas Week (November 17th – November 23rd). Setting an inspiring tone for the days ahead, the team started the week’s activities by paying a special, impactful visit to the Kigumo OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) and Disability Group.

This initiative powerfully reinforces Caritas Embu’s core mission: to be the living expression of God’s love by not just providing aid, but by building capacity among the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalized within the Catholic Diocese of Embu.

The visit to the Kigumo OVC and Disability Group was a heartfelt affirmation of dignity coupled with practical lessons in long-term food security and sustainability.

1. Connection and Solidarity

The Caritas team spent quality time listening to the group members, understanding their unique challenges, and celebrating their resilience. This on-the-ground engagement ensures Caritas Embu’s programs are truly community-driven. The day involved sharing essential supplies, offering support, and most importantly, the gift of presence and recognition.

2. Planting for the Future; Gardens and Fruit Trees

The highlight of the day was the powerful demonstration and practical planting activity focused on food security. The Caritas staff provided hands-on training on how to build simple, effective kitchen gardens, teaching gardening methods and effective composting ideal for small spaces and limited water resources.

Even more significantly, the team and the group members worked together to plant several fruit trees.

This symbolic act of planting trees represents a deep, long-term commitment to the community’s future:

  • Sustainable Nutrition: The trees will eventually provide a sustained source of vitamins and minerals, crucial for the long-term health of the children and group members.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Planting trees is an act of environmental care and climate-smart resilience.
  • A Legacy of Hope: Unlike immediate aid, the trees are a legacy that will bear fruit for years to come, reminding the group that they are investing in their own future.

This blending of practical training (kitchen gardens) with long-term investment (fruit trees) truly exemplifies Caritas’s focus on sustainable empowerment.

A Week of Mercy and Development

The powerful start at Kigumo sets the pace for a week-long series of events designed to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and celebrate the vital work of Caritas in the Diocese.

Caritas Week is a time for all faithful and people of goodwill to reflect on Catholic Social Teaching and commit to the works of mercy. It is a vital period for gathering support to sustain the crucial programs run by Caritas Embu.

The Grand Finale – Thanksgiving at Iriamurai Parish

The entire week will culminate in a joyous celebration of faith and gratitude. Caritas Week will conclude on Sunday, November 23rd, with a Thanksgiving Mass at Iriamurai Parish.

This mass is a moment of prayerful thanks for all the dedicated partners, staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries who make the mission of Caritas Embu possible. We invite everyone to join in this spiritual cornerstone of the week, celebrating the harvest of mercy and hope sown throughout the year.

The Caritas Embu team has started Caritas Week with a powerful statement: Charity must lead to self-sufficiency and a sustainable future. We look forward to a week filled with impactful activities.
